The history of March goes back to the Roman times, as it is named after Mars the Roman god of War. Also called Martius, this month was the beginning of the season for warfare and farming.

In most northern hemisphere countries now, March is a wonderful time of the year when spring starts to arrive and people all over the northern hemisphere get out of their homes to enjoy the outdoors. Generally speaking, in the U. S., there are no federally recognized holidays that occur in the month of March. Still, there are a number of holidays that people celebrate during this month.

March Holidays

Dentist’s Day – March 6th

There is seemingly a day for everyone and dentists get their day on March 6th. Created to help alleviate the fear of going to the dentist, people who recognize this day generally celebrate by thanking their dentist, making an appointment and showing off the results of their dentist’s work by presenting their smile to the world.

Employee Appreciation Day – First Friday in March

Since the boss gets a “Boss’s Day”, it is only fair that employees get an “Employee Appreciation Day” for their trouble.  Generally, this day is celebrated by businesses and corporations in various ways, from sending E-cards to hosting events. Employee Appreciation Day first occurred in 1995 and this celebration has been growing ever since.

The Ides of March – March 15th

Although most people associate this day with the slaying of Julius Caesar in 44BC, the Ides of March is actually stands for the first day of the Roman New Year and marks the first day of spring as well on the Roman calendar. On this day in 44BC, Julius Caesar was warned by a soothsayer to “beware the Ides of March”. He apparently took no heed of this warning and was slain by his friend Marcus Brutus and others.

St. Patrick’s Day – March 17th

The most recognizable holiday of the month, St. Patrick’s Day celebrates the Patron Saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the country around the 5th century AD. With over 34 million Americans of Irish decent, nearly nine times the population of Ireland itself, it’s little wonder that this holiday is celebrated nationwide. In addition, the month of March is known as Irish American Month as well.

International Earth Day – March 20th

Not to be confused with “Earth Day” celebrated in the US, the origins of this particular day are similar as it was initiated in 1969 by John McConnell of Davis, Iowa. By 1970, the UN had approved an Earth Day Proclamation and it was first celebrated on March 21st, 1971. Also called Sun-Earth-Day, this particular day is celebrated around the world and even in the US apart from the more recognizable “Earth Day”.

National Goof Off Day – March 22nd

Although certainly not officially recognized, this is a day dedicated to pursuing your interests away from work. From sitting at home, playing video games or just relaxing out it the yard, National Goof Off Day has no known source of origin, but it is getting more recognized over time.

I Am In Control Day – March 30th

When President Ronald Reagan was wounded during an assassination attempt on this day in 1981, his Secretary of State Alexander Haig spoke to the press and stated, “I am in control.” However, this particular statement was taken out of context and the eventual uproar over the Secretary of State being “in control” eventually led to Haig resigning his post. However, many people today celebrate this day as being one where they can get things under control.
