August

Originally named Sextilis in the Old Roman Calendar, in 8 BC the month was renamed by the Roman Senate to August in honor of Emperor Augustus. As founder of the Roman Empire and its first emperor, the month of August was a time of some of his greatest victories in battle including conquering Egypt.

From past times to recent times, August has been the hottest month of the year and one that is not thought of for having many holiday celebrations. However, there are plenty of smaller recognitions that are remembered in August that help make the month even more special.

VJ Day Kiss

While it may be hot outside, there are certainly plenty of days to celebrate during this month, including those that can help you cool down during the dog days of summer.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day – August 2nd

A perfect day to celebrate this cold treat, ice cream sandwiches have been popular for over a century thanks to the combination of vanilla and chocolate that is sold in stores or can be created at home with some ice cream between two wafers. While the origins of this day are rather murky and this day is not officially recognized, it is one that perfectly fits with the hot days of summer.

National Friendship Day – First Sunday in August

This is the day to get in touch with old friends and plan something special like a Sunday brunch, picnic, game day or simple get together. While the origins of National Friendship Day are not very clear, it is known that it was considered by the US Congress in 1935, so it does go back several decades. This is a day of celebrating friendships and catching up with old buddies and even making a new friend or two.

National Coast Guard Day – August 4th

This day has been set aside to recognize all those serving in the US Coast Guard. While much of the celebration is internal with those who serve along with their families, it is also a day in which the nation recognizes their valuable service to the country. The actual day of celebrating the Coast Guard goes back to its origins on August 4th, 1790 when the Revenue Cutter Service was created by the U. S. Congress to help protect the shores of the United States. By 1915, this military branch was renamed the “Coast Guard” and the day has been celebrated ever since.

VJ Day – August 14th or 15th

This is the day that celebrates the ending of World War 2 as Japan announced their surrender. The day itself is normally celebrated on the 14th as that is when the announcement from Japan came. However, the news itself was not announced to the world until the following day which sparked a number of worldwide celebrations. While different countries celebrate this event on either the 14th or 15th, what is clear is that VJ day is still recognized as a day of celebrating the end of the most damaging war in world history.

Senior Citizen Day – August 21st

Celebrating the contributions of our elders, National Senior Citizens Day is one that is honored in the U. S.  thanks to the official Presidential Proclamation made by then President Ronald Reagan on August 19th, 1988. On this day, we celebrate by spending time with and showing our appreciation of seniors along with doing any volunteer work that is needed as well.

Rumor Has It …

… that the naming of the month had nothing to do with the Emperor Augustus or the Romans, but instead was named after prehistoric indie rock band, Augustines because their fav teen idols, Moose and Squirrel pumped up the social media Likes.
